What am I doing here?

It's very interesting to me... the reaction people have when I tell them I take part in a virtual world. No matter how good I try to make it seem, people still think I'm crazy. I've given up on even telling people about it, even though it is a big part of my life. What am I doing here? I can't stay away... I've learned so much about myself the three and a half years I've been here. It's been the best creative outlet for me that I could have asked for and a tremendous inspiration. Second Life is a world built by the people in it, and I amazed by their brilliance. I think I am lucky to have found this place and I am happy to be here.

Imogen Heap - "Hide and Seek"

  1. I think it's one of those things that need to be experienced to be understood. When I first read about SL in a newspaper my initial thought was that it sounded a bit weird, and once I eventually started to wander around as a noob I fell in love bit for bit. Despite having system hair :P It is definitely a place of inspiration, both because of the creativity of people and the things that make SL feel like a virtual community, not only a "world".

(Oh, and I love that song. One of those tracks I can listen to on repeat <3)

  2. I took history of graphic design last semester and we didn't have time to finish the text book... but I wanted to see what they had written about current times. I couldn't believe it, Second Life was in there... described as a world having both it's own social and economic structures. It also said that it crosses a line between reality and fantasy...

  3. SL is definitely something that has to be experienced first hand in order to be fully understood. I don't hide my SL use from my friends, family, etc., but they never fully get it or why I spend so much time here. SL is a major outlet for me. It has put me back in touch with my creativity and provided an amazing new medium to work with. I too am always amazed at the artistic brilliance here. It never ceases to amaze me. I guess we are the lucky few to experience this fully.

  4. I think it's great for people like us but I've also seen in destroy relationships... I have to worn some people who show interest, that they better be 100% secure in their marriage because it will be a test of will power.

  5. Very true! Like you said, it does cross that very fine line of fantasy and reality. It can be very easy for people to get carried away without the constraints of real life. And I do agree that if SL were to destroy a marriage, the marriage was never that secure in the first place.
